Ed Miller receives Saving Special Places award at the 2015 Annual Awards Dinner

MHLC has received a challenge from The Miller Family Charitable Trust. Each new MHLC donor who gives up to $1,000 in a first-time gift will be matched by this grant. If we raise $15,000 in new donations from supporters who have not previously given to MHLC, the trust will match each gift dollar-for-dollar.

The Miller Family has pledged this generous donation in memory of longtime MHLC supporter, and passionate naturalist, Ed Miller, who passed away this spring. Prior to his death, Ed had been in discussions with Mark King to create a new donor challenge in the hopes of inspiring new contributions from members of our community.

Ed spent a distinguished career as an electrical engineer for GE’s steam turbine department and received world-wide recognition for his expertise. A great lover of the outdoors, Ed volunteered with the Boy Scouts, trekked through the Adirondacks, created the Miller Canoes, skied with the Schenectady Wintersports Club, and more. In his retirement, he focused his energies on preserving and enjoying the natural world, delving into botanical studies, organizing regional botany conferences, canoeing and hiking his way around the country, and contributing to the conservation of the Capital Region. Ed created a remarkable educational collection of native species for the Landis Arboretum and established a generous fund with the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy for the protection of Wolf Hollow in Glenville. He was recognized by The Nature Conservancy with their Oak Leaf Award and was cited as one of 50 national heroes by them.
