2020 Guest Speaker:
William Bryant Logan is the author of Sprout Lands, Oak, Air and Dirt, the last of which was made into an award-winning documentary. He is on the faculty of the New York Botanical Garden. William is a certified arborist, and founder and president of Urban Arborists, Inc., a Brooklyn-based tree company. He has won numerous Quill and Trowel Awards from the Garden Writers of America, and was a contributing editor to House Beautiful, House and Garden, and Garden Design magazines, as well as a regular garden writer for the New York Times. He won a 2012 Senior Scholar Award from the New York State chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), as well as a True Professional of Arboriculture award from the international ISA. He also won an NEH grant to translate Calderón de la Barca and has published many translations from the Spanish, including the work of García Lorca, Ramón del Valle Inclán, and Calderón.
2020 Award Recipients:
The Saving Special Places Award for significant contribution to land conservation in the Capital Region will be awarded to Joesph E. Coffey, Jr., P.E., Commissioner of the Albany Department of Water and Water Supply; Charles G. Houghton, III, Chair of the Albany Water Board; and Amy Walsh, Watershed Manager Albany Department of Water and Water Supply. Coffey, Houghton, and Walsh were instrumental in the partnership between the City of Albany, the Albany Water Board, the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy, and The Nature Conservancy that preserved the lands of the Alcove and Basic Creek Reservoirs. George Bailie and Peter Richards will be awarded the Dan Driscoll Leadership Award for giving outstanding time and energy to advance the mission of MHLC. George Bailey serves as the Preserve Steward for the Holt Preserve. Peter Richards serves as the Preserve Steward of the Winn Preserve. Both MHLC volunteers have regularly attended stewardship work days throughout the spring and summer and have spent countless hours working to improve the trails of the MHLC Preserves.
