MHLC Stewardship Volunteer Calendar


Whether you’re a long-time MHLC volunteer or new to the volunteering community, we invite you to join us at one of these upcoming stewardship volunteer opportunities!

Step 1: Be sure to fill out a volunteer application if you have not volunteered with MHLC before. 

Step 2: Review the list below and complete an online registration for each of the stewardship days that you plan to attend.

Step 3: Mark your calendar. Our Stewardship Coordinator, Kent Harlow, will be in touch with you a few days before the stewardship work day(s) to confirm your participation.

Trail Building and Improvements at the Holt Preserve
Monday, July 1st
Holt Preserve, New Scotland, NY

Please meet at the Lower Entrance on Lower Copeland Hill Road. We will be conducting trail improvement projects at MHLC’s oldest preserve all summer long. To RSVP, please register on our events page.


Trail Reroute and Bridge Build at Van Dyke Preserve
Wednesday, July 10th from 9 AM to noon
Van Dyke Preserve, Bethlehem, NY

Join us for some bridge, trail reroute, and trail construction projects. Volunteers will be using trail tools and hand tools, and will participate in general construction. There are a variety of tasks and all volunteers are helpful in our efforts! We will provide tools, water, gloves, and granola bars. Be sure to wear boots and clothes that can get muddy!



Trail Reroute at Keleher Preserve
Wednesday, July 17th from 9 AM to noon
Keleher Preserve, New Scotland, NY

Join us as we reroute the trail around some persistent muddy sections and assess further stewardship projects at the Preserve. Be sure to wear sturdy footwear. We will provide tools, loppers, water, gloves, and granola bars. Or, bring your own tools if you prefer! Volunteers of all abilities and experience are welcome, and can expect trail and hand tool use.



Culvert work at Bennett Hill Preserve
Thursday, July 25th from 9 AM to noon
Bennett Hill Preserve, New Scotland, NY

Join us for the continuation of our culvert work at Bennett Hill Preserve. Work will include digging, placing, and restructuring of the culverts. Depending on the number of volunteers, a separate work crew may be assigned to general trail clearing and lopping. All abilities are welcome, and tools, water, and granola bars will be provided! 



Trail Maintenance, Invasive Vine Cutting, and Stump Removal at the Fox Preserve
Monday, July 29th from 9 AM to noon – Rain Date: Tuesday July 30th
Fox Preserve, Colonie, NY

Join us to do some trail spruce up work cutting vines, clearing branches and overgrowth, and keeping our trail looking clear and inviting. Please bring your own loppers, handsaw, and work gloves if you have them. We will be training our Preserve Stewards in weed-whacker use as part of this work day. This is training is recommended for all Preserve Stewards, as well as other volunteers who would like to help maintain our trails. We will be going over basic stringing, safety, and maintenance of our MHLC weed-whackers. Preserve Stewards, please email Kent Harlow for more details!
